Originally from Scotland, R. Hunter Middleton was the director of the department of typeface design at Ludlow Typograph Company from 1933 to 1971. He produced drawings and supervised the pattern making for many typefaces. His designs include Ludlow Bodoni Modern, Eusebius, Delphian, Ludlow Garamond, Stallar, Tempo, Karnak, Radiant, Coronet and others.
He studied at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and received a Doctor of Fine Arts from Transylvania University. In 1944 he started his private press, The Cherryburn Press.
