Laszlo Matulay

1912 - 199

Laszlo Matulay began his career in his native Vienna. He left Austria in 1934 and came to New York. His illustration work was used in tapestries, book jackets, murals and advertising. His work was exhibited by the New York Public Library in 1937 and in 1940 there was an exhibition of his work at the New York World's Fair. Following that exhibition, he became a highly sought after illustrator with works appearing in Harper's Bazaar, Time and Esquire. He served on the faculty at the Laboratory School of Industrial Arts after WWII and was the first artistic director at Rodale Press.
