Basics of Data Visualization

The data visualization lectures give students a broad overview of different data visualization and what kinds of stories they tell a viewer. The visual grammar part of the lecture collects some of the best pieces from Dan Roam’s three books and website and steps the students through the visual grammar of telling a story with data and what kind of meaning it should have. Each piece is followed by an exercise. The rest of the lecture discusses why you would visualize data and how it can enhance the information and meaning and then goes into details of examples of different visualization types with examples from around the internet and from books.
