San Jose Repertory Theatre - Website Style Guide

Image Rules

Most images used on the site are photographic in nature. These should be presented as JPEGs.

JPEG images are saved out at approximately 35-60 quality in ImageReady or Photoshop. All images are scaled prior to being placed in the HTML as larger images contribute to a slower page load. All images have height and width specified in the HTML as this helps the page load faster.

Images used inline in the body of a content page should be no wider than 200 px. A border attribute of 1 can be used if necessary and this is placed in the HTML rather than on the image itself. Images are generally placed within a nested table so that a caption can accompany the image and also be inset. Whenever possible, a caption should be included to add context to the image within the section.

Plays Images
Images used on the homepage and in the Plays pages are 125px max width. The illustration for the show is used until an available photo is ready from the production. This image generally does not have a captio.

Images used in the Image Gallery
Images in the image gallery have two instances. A _sm version that is 125px max width for horizontal images and 100px max width for vertical images. These images link to larger JPEG versions that are between 400px and 600px max width depending on whether they are horizontal or vertical in nature. The image quality of the large JPEG version is significantly higher than all other images on the site, as these images are intended to be downloaded and used by the media.

Promo Buttons
All promo button images are 133 x 68 and are GIF files. These are inserted into the pages with an SSI file. Each section of the site shares a promo set. For new promo images, contact Erin Malone.
