Glenora Winery
Assignment: Develop a commemorative wine label, poster and t-shirt for the annual summer jazz concert series for Glenora Winery.
Approach: The Glenora Winery approached the graduate design class at RIT to develop materials for their Jazz Concert series. Working with 2 other designers and Professor Roger Remington, each team member developed ideas for the wine label. The goal was to create an image that was interesting, represented JAZZ and would fit the rather odd vertical rectangle that was dictated to us by the winery based on preprinted labels that already existed for their wine.
Using lines and geometric shapes, I developed and image that represented the instruments of jazz - the saxaphone, the piano and the guitar - and through the use of lines and irregular spacing, represented the feeling and pacing of jazz music. The date and the word JAZZ were worked in to finish the image. My design was chosen by the team. I then had to develop the black and white image into a meaningful color image as well as a poster and tshirt design. The poster size was given to us by the winery and the printer they worked with so label image had to work within those constraints. The image was enlarged and the remaining space developed to include the essential information of who was playing when. I then worked with the printers to create digital mechanicals and FTPed files directly to them for printing.
Outcome: The winery was extremely happy with the system and the posters were a success in terms of audience reach. The posters stood out when placed among other posters and the printing costs were kept down due to the use of only 3 colors in the printing.
