Information Architecture

A couple of weeks from now I will be attending the IDEA conference, put on by the IA Institute, for the first time. Over the years I have heard about the previous versions of this conference but was never able to attend (working for the man, I was only allowed one conference a year and [...]

In Jesse James Garrett’s closing plenary at the IA Summit he challenged us to consider a way to critique our work and to develop a language of critique. Other disciplines, architecture, design, art, theater, even science, have developed and evolved a language by which the field can discern good work versus bad, by which members [...]

Christian Crumlish and I brought out some of the material we have been working on for you book and gave a talk at the IA Summit. We tried to provide a handful of real world scenarios with which a designer might find themselves in and then offer some [...]

At the Interactions 09 conference in Vancouver, Luke Wroblewski gave an interesting talk about the processes he and his team used to redesign the Yahoo! homepage. It was an interesting talk not so much for the outcome but for how he applied and talked about methods, best practices and patterns. His use of these kinds [...]

As I have made the transition to consulting and back to hands on work, I find that the tools I have been using are insufficient for my needs.
I can wireframe and create flows and use cases very easily with Omnigraffle, but I find it lacking for creating interactive prototypes. I have investigated Axure and it [...]

Earlier this year, as part of our workshop at the IA Summit, we made a robust set of design stencils that map to the Yahoo! Pattern Library and the Yahoo! User Interface Library. This week we head out to the IA Summit and present our workshop on writing, using and building a pattern library and using that with code to prototype and build sites. My slides are done and Lucas is pulling everything together from the three of us presenting. It should be an interesting day and hopefully [...]

I am conducting a preconference workshop, with my esteemed colleagues Christian Crumlish and Lucas Pettinati, on building a pattern library and using patterns and code libraries to build sites. The official title: Design patterns: from interaction to design to build
The full workshop description is posted on the conference website. I highly recommend you check it [...]

My friend, Alex Wright, an IA at the NY Times, recently published an article, Friending, Ancient or Otherwise on the NY Times. The article looks at the recent trends in social networking and friending, through the lens of ancient tribal practices. It’s interesting to see that technology is unconsciously manipulated to still meet basic [...]

Christian Crumlish, our Pattern Library curator, over here at Yahoo!, was recently filmed giving a brownbag on the pattern library to Yahoo!’s UED organization.
It’s a good talk on the history of the library and how to create patterns and why we want to create patterns and the publishing process we use here at Yahoo!.
After a [...]

I just finished as a reviewer for the IA Summit submissions and I have a whole new respect for how difficult it is to select and craft a program for a conference.
That said, I think I also learned a few things about how to better create a proposal for a submission. I think these thoughts [...]
